STOCKHOLM

Sweden

Stockholm is often called the “Venice of the North.” The city is built on 14 islands connected by more than 50 bridges. Here, the waters of Lake Mälaren meet the Baltic Sea, making water as much a part of the urban landscape as its streets and squares.

The Stockholm Archipelago consists of approximately 30,000 islands, islets, and skerries, making it one of the largest archipelagos in the world.

One of the symbols of Djurgården Island is Gröna Lund. Opened in 1883, it is considered one of the oldest amusement parks in Europe. Its carousels and roller coasters are located right on the waterfront, and some rides offer views not only of the city itself but also of the many islands of the Stockholm Archipelago. Over the years, Gröna Lund’s stage has hosted ABBA, Bob Marley, Elton John, and many other world-famous musicians.

The local people value comfort, work-life balance, and the famous Swedish concept of lagom — the pursuit of moderation and harmony in all things. The word lagom is difficult to translate directly into English; its meaning is closest to “not too much and not too little, but just the right amount.” This philosophy is reflected in their lifestyle, mindset, and even the way they dress.

Stockholm is also considered one of Europe’s leading centers for the creative industries. The city is known not only for its architecture but also for its large community of independent designers, illustrators, musicians, and creative studios.

The Old Town, Gamla Stan, is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe. Its oldest buildings date back to the 13th century. The district’s distinctive façades are painted in warm shades of ochre, red, and orange, which have become one of Stockholm’s most recognizable visual features.

Its narrow cobblestone streets are so tight that in some places less than a meter separates the buildings. The most famous alley, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, is only about 90 centimeters wide.

For centuries, water has shaped the development of Stockholm. More than 30% of the city’s area is covered by water. Goods, ideas, and people from across the Baltic region arrived here by sea, helping shape the city’s identity. Today, historic vessels, ferries, and sightseeing boats remain an integral part of the urban landscape.

Stockholm is home to one of the largest public library systems in Scandinavia. Among its most iconic buildings is the Stockholm Public Library, designed by renowned Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund. Known for its striking circular reading room and timeless design, it remains one of the city's most celebrated architectural landmarks.

Sweden has long earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading music nations. It is the birthplace of ABBA, Avicii, and many other internationally known artists, while Swedish producers have played a major role in shaping modern pop music. Perhaps that is why vinyl culture remains an important part of Stockholm’s music scene even today.

One of its most important cultural landmarks is the Nordic Museum, dedicated to the history, traditions, and everyday life of the Nordic countries. Located on the city’s waterfront, it offers a fascinating look at Scandinavian culture and heritage.

While photographing Stockholm, I wanted to experience the city not only from the outside but also from within. Scandinavian design is known for its simplicity, functionality, and minimalism, and Stockholm’s apartments reflect this perfectly. One thing that surprised me was the shared laundry rooms found in the basements of many apartment buildings, where residents reserve specific time slots for doing their laundry.

We were also lucky to have wonderful neighbors. They often gathered to play guitar and piano and sing beautifully together. More than once I found myself singing along through the wall, enjoying this small glimpse into everyday life in Stockholm. 😅

Thank you for exploring Stockholm with me.

I left a piece of my heart in Stockholm.

If this gallery has inspired you to visit the city and experience its unique atmosphere for yourself, then I have achieved my goal.

Would you like your town to inspire future visitors in the same way? If so, I would be happy to discuss your project.
